FAQs

Use of the artwork you see, which is composed of bits and pieces of a delightful ink and watercolor piece called "Use", has been generously granted to The Traders by Oregon artist Sandra Strait. The original is in a personal journal. No matter how we've begged and pleaded, she has declined to part with it. Sandra can be reached through (and more examples of her stunning work seen on) her blog, "Life Imitates Doodles". Here's the link: http://lifeimitatesdoodles.blogspot.com Please give her our very best.

The Traders Foundation is a self-sustaining social enterprise providing on-the-job business and life-skills training to regional survivors of domestic abuse. Our goal is to rekindle self-worth and instill self-discipline, thus creating the possibility of life-long self-sufficiency. The Traders Foundation currently engages in two commercial business activities; as online, mail-order, and special event retailers of crafting supplies, handcrafted goods, and vintage and antique collectibles, and as providers of fulfillment services for small producers and makers in northern North Carolina and southern Virginia.

"Remaindered" books are publishers' unsold stock, and are an excellent value when it comes to "how to" books, like those The Traders carries. In order for publishers to write-off their still in-stock but unsold inventory, books must be either destroyed or “remaindered” – that is, sold at a greatly reduced price. A "remaindered" book must be marked so that it is not inavertently returned to inventory at full price. Hence "remainder" marks. "Remainder marks" are generally simple; they often look like random dots or streaks from a black or colored magic marker. Most booksellers hate to mark books, so "remainder" marks are usually found on the bottom edge of the pages, near the spine, where they won't be seen when shelved.

Probably because we don't pester our customers after a purchase. Our packing slip, included with each purchase, respectfully requests a review, especially if they are happy, and our customers are always encouraged to contact us if there is a problem. Otherwise, we think it's intrusive to bombard our customers with requests for feedback.

Our listings disappear because they've sold out. We don't displaying items we no longer have because they would continue to show up in searches, and we think that's misleading. But rest assured, we keep the details of every item we’ve ever sold, so just drop us a line and we’ll be happy to pass the information along.

Sort of. We’ve all been there, so just drop us a line and we’ll be happy to take an item “out of inventory” for up to two (2) weeks. When you’re ready to buy, just let us know and we’ll “restore it” so that you can complete your purchase. If we don't hear back from you after two weeks, we'll assume you no longer want or need the item, and simply put it back online, no hard feelings. We're on the "honor system" around here, so there is no deposit or other security required - we only ask that folks not abuse this service.
