Item details

Traditional Australian Drizabones are a long coat made from cotton oilskin and designed as a waterproof shell for the cattlemen and women of the high country. We used them when we were camping when I was a child, but waterproof garments have come a long way since then- they are lighter, brighter and more practical these days. Because of this, my family was sending our old Drizabones to a second-hand shop unless I wanted to upcycle them- I took on the challenge!

My first design is inspired by the traditional Drizabone, but of course for toddlers and small children. My boy just looks darling in it- a real little mountain man! However, it is a versatile pattern, and choice of fabric and notions makes a huge difference to the function (warm vs. waterproof) and appearance of the final product.

Styling tips!

Advice regarding upcycling an old Drizabone is included. I have made a black denim version with toggles for my son, and green wool version with feature crochet roses for my little girl to wear next winter too. There are many opportunities for using contrast here- under the shoulder flap, the pocket flaps, the collar and the wrist ties all look great in a contrast.

The front flap closure can be done with buttons, invisible snaps (with or without a feature on the outside), frog closures, buttons or toggles. The shoulder flap ties can be made from lace or ribbon (I want to try a beaded string next!) or simply omitted.

Sewing expertise:

Intermediate. The main technical sewing is making corners neat when turning out, and top-stitching neatly. Instructions given for bagging a lining are clear, but it is always tricky the first time you try it. Some sewing machines may struggle with multiple layers of fabric- chose a lighter fabric if this is the case.
