Item details

Silica Gel Powder, Desiccant.

This is a "coarse" powder, perhaps "fine sand" is a better description. It's the same moisture-absorption material that's in the little packets with round beads inside that you find packed with your new electronics purchase or other products that need to stay dry. The powder form is in wide usage as an insecticide for household pests which it kills by absorbing moisture (and oil) from their cuticles, causing death by dehydration. It used to be found only in the bead form as far as I know. The Wiki article on it implies "bead size" by their term "granular", but I suppose this "fine sand" could be thought of as "fine granules". Describing the way it works by using the word "absorption" is really not true. It works by "adsorption", a surface phenomena rather than "absorption", an interior phenomena.
The Wiki article on this (and a quote) is here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silica_gel
"Silica gel is a granular, vitreous, porous form of silicon dioxide made synthetically from sodium silicate. Silica gel contains a nano-porous silica micro-structure, suspended inside a liquid. Most applications of silica gel require it to be dried, in which case it is called silica xerogel. For practical purposes, silica gel is often interchangeable with silica xerogel. Silica xerogel is tough and hard; it is more solid than common household gels like gelatin or agar. It is a naturally occurring mineral that is purified and processed into either granular or beaded form. As a desiccant, it has an average pore size of 2.4 nanometers and has a strong affinity for water molecules...
Silica gel is most commonly encountered in everyday life as beads in a small (typically 2 x 3 cm) paper packet. In this form, it is used as a desiccant to control local humidity to avoid spoilage or degradation of some goods....Once saturated with water, the gel can be regenerated by heating it to 120 °C (250 °F) for 1–2 hours".
Although silica gel is most often used as a desiccant in everything from cat litter to bottles of vitamins to industrial compressed air, it also finds uses in chemistry (chromatography) and as a food additive. Again, from the Wiki article: "Listed uses include: anticaking agent, defoaming agent, stabilizer, adsorbent, carrier, conditioning agent, chillproofing agent, filter aid, emulsifying agent, viscosity control agent, and anti-settling agent".-

FAQs

I'm sorry, but at this time we do not ship internationally.

If you would like a smaller or larger quantity of a raw material, click the "Request a custom order" button and tell us how much you would like. Or just contact us and let us know what you'd like. We'll get back to you ASAP.

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. Where possible, we're converting to calculated shipping. We originally didn't provide it because we sell so many dissimilar items (size, weight, etc), that it would not be possible to do it accurately. If your shipping cost is high, you can do one of the following: If you see "Request a Custom Order", "Contact", or "Ask a Question" on an item's page, you may use it to request a reserved listing. You may copy and paste a list of the items in your cart, send a screen shot of your items, or simply favorite them, and request a "reserved" or "custom" order. Or you may do nothing. We will see your multiple items & will always refund excess shipping charges before shipping your items.

If you have a technical question about an item we've listed, please don't hesitate to ask. We enjoy helping people out with a material or a process. We give anecdotal information in our listings if we have any. If you disagree with it or think we're being inaccurate or misleading please let us know that, too. If there are discrepancies in any of our listings let us know, we make mistakes like everybody and we'd like to be set straight and get those mistakes corrected.
