How do you to Attach and Join Clay Pieces Together?

One of the things you learn in ceramics is "Score and Slip." The slip and score method is used to combine two clay pieces without blending their edges together or otherwise altering their form. Clay is best attached when it is in the leather-hard stage, when the clay is stiff but still a little flexible and has a slight sheen.

1. Mark the area needed to be scored. The XST04 Needle tool is great for this.
2. Score all areas that will be touching with in a cross-hatched pattern. Use the Scorings, Serrated Scraping, and Needle tools for this (XST04/XST09/XST10).
3. Wet the scored area with either slip, or 50/50 mix of water and vinegar. Work the slip into the scoring. The XST09 Potter’s Thumb and XST04 Needle tool works well for this.
4. Attached the pieces, taking care not to trap any air in the joints, and put firm pressure, pushing both pieces against one another.
5. Wipe up any excess slip. If the joint line is not consistent, you can use the XST04 Needle tool to refine the joint line.
6. If added strength is needed, you can add a clay coil over the joint. Smooth the coil into the joint area using the XST09 Potter’s Thumb.
7. Wrap the whole project in plastic to slowly equalize the moisture of the whole project. If not allowed to equalize slowly, the joints may crack and fail. Depending on the complexity of the project and differences in clay dryness and thickness, leave the project wrapped in plastic from one day to a week.
8. After equalizing the moisture of the clay, take it out of the plastic and let it completely dry out before it can be fired.

How to Join (Marry) Wet Clay Pieces Together?

If both pieces of clay are still wet, you can use this method to Marry the clay pieces:

1. Firmly press the two pieces together to get a good joint.
2. Use the XST09 Potter’s Thumb to initially smooth the joint.
3. Apply a clay coil over the joint area. Work the coil into the joint and smooth using the Potter’s Thumb.
4. If the clay was all at the same dryness, there’s no need to place the item in plastic. If the clay was at slightly different levels of dryness, it’s a good idea to wrap the item in plastic until they equalize.

If you find you need to score larger areas, you may want to consider Xiem’s Serrated Stainless Steel Ribs.
