A beautiful flower with practical uses Canna edulis, or Queensland Arrowroot, is a perennial tuberous flowering plant with many possibilities. Super easy to grow in full sun to light shade. Scarlet red flowers are edible and adds an exotic feel to salads or other plates as a garnish. Tubers are large and edible cooked and used like a potato. The seeds are edible while still under developed and the leaves used as a wrap for cooking other foods. The seeds once mature are very hard and were once used as buckshot pellets hence the plant's other name Indian Shot. The seeds stay viable for very long lengths of time if stored right and they are the perfect survival seeds. In tropical to zone 8 this Canna is great for food forest and permaculture applications.
