Item details

Herdsmen in the middle ages developed a felted garment that evolved in to this dramatic Hungarian Szür. It is a mid-calf length coat worn over the shoulders as a cape, with a clasp just below the neckline with a decorative buckle. The sleeves are sewn shut and are used as pockets.

Traditionally made of felted wool, the Szür lends itself to appliqué and embroidery. In the Great Plains of eastern Hungary, a white base is used with black edging accented in yellow and green. Red cutwork of stylized flowers and leaves also give it style.

Two versions of the pattern are included. One is based on the traditional and includes optional directions for cutwork. The other version is more contemporary with pockets, a lined collar and lapel, and finished edges on the hems.

Many materials can be used besides the traditional felt. Heavyweight fabrics are best such as wool, corduroy, or denim. This pattern is good for showing off your handwork including quilting, embroidery and handwoven fabric.

The Szür is one size, designed to fit men and women.
