Item details

Carbon Fiber Tow (Yarn or Roving).

The correct term for a bunch of individual strands of carbon fiber in the cross section of a thin rectangle is "tow". I added the other terms, yarn and roving, which are officially used to describe Kevlar and fiberglass.
The thin rectangle is held loosely together with sizing (individual fibers can split off the rectangle easily when they're wetted with resin). The measurements of the cross section of this tow are 2.5 mm wide by 0.07 mm thick. I'm going to try to calculate the rough number of feet on this spool:
The length of one winding of one piece of tow from one end of the spool to the other end is (approximately) 3 feet.
(The following measurements are done with a known accurate Mitutoyo digital dial caliper).
The diameter of the cardboard tube alone is 81.23 mm.
The diameter of the tube with the carbon tow on it is 84.50 mm.
That makes the thickness of all the layers of tow on the carboard equal to 1.63 mm (84.50 - 81.23 = 3.27, dividing 3.27 by 2 gives the thickness of the tow on the cardboard tube: 3.27/2 = 1.635 mm.
Dividing the total tow thickness by the thickness of one piece of tow gives the number of windings (going once from end to end): 1.635/0.07 = 23.36 windings. Rounding that down to 23 windings and multiplying the total length by the number of feet in 1 winding 23 x 3' = 69 feet total length.
The cheapest I can find this is $0.099 per foot here:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/12k-Carbon-Fiber-Tow-Hercules-IM7-/221223238525?hash=item3381eebb7d:g:EhkAAMXQY8JRhVl0
$0.099 x 69 feet would equal $6.83 worth of carbon fiber on this spool. This has not been respooled to a smaller weight spool, so all the strands are laying flat (except for about 4 or 5 feet of loose tow at the end). I'm selling this relatively small and inexpensive roll for people who might want to try using it by hand or in a DIY setup with a mandrel for the spool held in a vise and another mandrel with a tube or irregular shape chucked into a drill. Provide a means to wet the tow with resin, turn the drill on and wind away. That's the basic idea behind a process called "Filament Winding". See the Wiki article on it here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filament_winding
I see there are also at least a couple YouTube videos on the subject near the Wiki article.
The filiment winding section above was written with fiberglass roving in mind, but it could be done with carbon fiber tow, also.

FAQs

I'm sorry, but at this time we do not ship internationally.

If you would like a smaller or larger quantity of a raw material, click the "Request a custom order" button and tell us how much you would like. Or just contact us and let us know what you'd like. We'll get back to you ASAP.

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. Where possible, we're converting to calculated shipping. We originally didn't provide it because we sell so many dissimilar items (size, weight, etc), that it would not be possible to do it accurately. If your shipping cost is high, you can do one of the following: If you see "Request a Custom Order", "Contact", or "Ask a Question" on an item's page, you may use it to request a reserved listing. You may copy and paste a list of the items in your cart, send a screen shot of your items, or simply favorite them, and request a "reserved" or "custom" order. Or you may do nothing. We will see your multiple items & will always refund excess shipping charges before shipping your items.

If you have a technical question about an item we've listed, please don't hesitate to ask. We enjoy helping people out with a material or a process. We give anecdotal information in our listings if we have any. If you disagree with it or think we're being inaccurate or misleading please let us know that, too. If there are discrepancies in any of our listings let us know, we make mistakes like everybody and we'd like to be set straight and get those mistakes corrected.
