There are not many items that look positively mediaeval and five hundred years old. This French lock doesn't quite fall into that category but it is certainly antique and could easily go as far back as early nineteenth century.
It is also, in our opinion, one of the most interesting and decorative items you could have in your home. There is a key but it's not original - that was probably lost a century or so ago - so we've adapted a key of the period. We know it's never going to engage the mechanism but it gives the lock a tremendous lift.
There's a lot of woodworm present but, naturally, it has been treated and, in our opinion, looks perfectly at home on the lock - perhaps even enhances it.
By knocking out the three old nail heads, screwing the lock into place and then replacing the nail heads, the lock could be fitted to a door. It would never work, of course, but what a fabulous piece of decoration.
