ANCIENT VENETIAN MILLEFIORE TRADE BEADS PAIR (2) SET
An earthy color scheme, but were used like money for Europeans trading with Africans for their natural resources such as timber, ivory, gold, palm and coconut oil, tortoise shells, incense, and other rare items.
Europeans got their trade beads from Venice, Holland, and Bohemia. Venice led by far in the production of blown glass trade beads as their glass making already dated back centuries. Millefiore "Thousand Flowers" design was invented by Venetians by combining lengths of long canes of different colors and firing them and then cutting them into small disks making the flower image. Then the disks were added to the body of a larger cane and fired.
These two cane and barrel type beads are unusual and possibly centuries old. As time went on, the millefiore beads became very colorful. My photos are true to the actual bead color on my computer. I purchased these two beads in the early 70s. I only have two like this.
