Apiaceae: branched, hairless perennial to 40cm, found on coastal rocky habitats. The flowers are greenish yellow, in umbels 3-6cm across, with 8-30 rays and many bracts, blooming from June-September. The seeds are egg-shaped, ridged and corky. The leaves are divided into narrow, fleshy lobes, triangular in cross-section. Locally common, mainly along the west and south coasts of the country. Native to Coastal regions of Europe, including Britain, to the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
The leaves can be eaten raw or cooked, and are vaguely reminiscent of fennel, which a nice salty flavour. The leaves are used as a flavouring in salads and fish dishes. Gathered in spring, the young leaves when sprinkled with salt and boiled make a very good pickle. The leaves are rich in vitamin C. Rock samphire is little used in herbal medicine, though it is a good diuretic and holds out potential as a treatment for obesity. The young growing tips have carminative, depurative, digestive and diuretic properties.
Rapidly germinating, keep seed in constant moisture (but not wet) with temperatures of about +20°C [68°F]. Seeds must be covered thinly. Do not cover very small seeds, but tightly press into the earth. Keep in cooler conditions after germination occurs.
Prefers a moist light sandy or gravelly soil, doing very well between stones or by a south-east facing wall.
