This is a high quality AAA+ example of an Australian Lightning Ridge mined black opal triplet professionally cut into an oval cabochon and ready for setting into jewelry.
The stone measures 9 x 7 mm and weighs 1.25 carats.
Because this opal is protected by its triplet construction, it can safely be used to create a wonderful opal ring with. Typically, opals are used more for pendants and sometimes rings but the setting has to be a special protective type of ring setting to protect the fragile opal from mechanical damage. Triplets not only protect the underlying opal from mechanical damage, they protect the opal from environmental damage as well.
Opal's play of color comes from the high water content within its microscopic chemical structure. Therefore, opals are susceptible to drying out or dehydrating. To prevent this, opals must be coated in an oil based substance periodically to prevent the water from escaping. Once an opal dries out, it loses its play of color. This is not even the worst of it. If an opal dehydrates, a process known as crazing can occur. Crazing is the diffuse surface cracking of an opal much like a spider web's appearance. Once crazing occurs, it is irreversible and the opal is ruined. Triplet constructed opals are protected from all of these potential hazards.
With triplets, you never have to worry about oiling your opal or worrying that it is going to chip, crack or shatter. Triplets are the really the best and most practical way to own a fine opal piece. And they are less expensive than their solid counterparts but remember, all of the potential hazards vanish when owning a triplet opal.
I actually took photos under very bright and low lighting situations to show just how much the light plays a factor in the opal's overall play of color. Play of color is also known as "opalescence". As you can see, this particular opal has incredible play of color showing every color in the visible light spectrum! And the entire surface of the opal has play of color which is actually quite rare. Many black opals have areas that do not show any play of color and therefore the base color is all you see in certain spots. NOT THIS OPAL. This is a very high quality AAA+ black opal specimen.
Opal is the official birthstone for October so this would also make a very nice birthstone gift for someone.
Thank you kindly for visiting my shop.
Shipping & policies
My shipping rates are a flat fee of 4.50 for the first item and 0.99 for each additional item in the same order. This covers all the costs of envelopes, packaging material, handling fees and trips to the post office. Unfortunately, the USPS has raised their rates on ALL domestic and international packages by over 35 percent as of Thursday, January 31, 2018. I sincerely apologize for the shipping rate increase but is beyond my control.
If you are an INTERNATIONAL BUYER, please contact me prior to checkout so I can look up the correct postage for your particular country. Sometimes there are issues with the customs agency of your country, so expect that there might possibly be a delay in delivery of your item. Please note, once a package leaves the United States, there is nothing I can really do to find out exactly where your package might be. If there is an issue, please use the customs number I provided with your order and contact your country's customs agency to find out when you may expect to receive your item.
Additionally, for both domestic and international orders, please understand that I cannot be held responsible for incorrectly delivered packages, stolen packages or items lost by the United States post office or your country's postal service. In these cases, I will do my best to work with you to locate your package with the tracking number provided by USPS or in international shipping cases the customs number for your package. This also includes items being returned to me for refunds or exchanges as well.
Most of my jewelry is inexpensive so insurance is not necessary however some more expensive items, ie. emeralds, ruby, tanzanite, morganite and sapphires, & some of the vintage coins must be insured. PLEASE NOTE: Insurance and tracking fees have already been calculated in the shipping costs you see posted for any items requiring insurance. All items with a value over $100 will be insured for both the buyer's and seller's protection.

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand my shop policies.
All the best!
All items purchased from my shop carry a 30 day warranty. Any item found to be damaged within 30 days of original receipt date will either be replaced (if possible) or a refund given for the full purchase price including shipping costs.
PLEASE NOTE: Items that are deemed to be damaged by improper handling or cleaning on the part of the purchaser are not covered under this warranty.
It is highly advised that you inspect your gemstone or jewelry piece very carefully immediately upon receipt because after the thirty day warranty period expires from the original receipt date, I cannot issue any refunds or exchanges for any purchase of any kind. This is in part due to the large number of attempted scams that force me to strictly adhere to this policy.
I have included some tips and pointers below to aid you in taking better care of your merchandise and specific cleaning techniques to help minimize potential damage occurring to your jewelry or gems.
Many of my gemstone jewelry items can be fragile if not protected from knocks and bumps due to their hardness scores on the Moh's scale. Care must be taken by the buyer to protect against damage especially rings as they are the type of jewelry most susceptible to damage and softer, more brittle gemstones, for example, opals and gemstones with lower Moh's numbers.
Care must also be taken when cleaning certain gemstones. Never use ANY harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaning on ANY items purchased from my shop. Using plain mild soap and warm water with an ultra soft toothbrush is the best cleaning method. This will help avoid damage to the gemstones used in creating some of my jewelry items and the gemstones themselves.
If you have any additional questions on how to take care of and protect your specific gemstone or jewelry piece, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be more than happy to share my knowledge with you.
ENJOY YOUR PURCHASE!!!!
