Hori Hori Knife
Classic design hori hori knife engraved with the encouraging phrase "Growing Abundance". Feel motivated and encouraged every time you hold it in your hand. Or bring a smile to the face of your favorite gardener every time they use it.
The strong hardwood handle has been engraved by hand and then protected from the elements with a hand rubbed wax finish. It's hard to beat the warmth of a natural wood handle and this one will last for many years. We've drilled a lanyard hole and added a leather lanyard to help you maximize the chopping and digging power of this heavy duty carbon steel blade.
Be inspired as you're growing abundance!
Comes with convenient soil depth measurements stamped into the blade to help ensure you're planting at the right depth for a bountiful harvest. Note: the original blade coating from the manufacturer will wear with normal usage enabling your hori hori to develop the honest patina of a well loved tool. For this reason, we ship the knife with a protective tape covering on the blade and can only accept returns if we receive the blade back in original condition.
Standard engraved message can be replaced with your personalized message as an option (16 character limit, including spaces). Personalized engraving may add 1-2 additional days to shipping time and personalized items cannot be returned.

More thoughts on the Hori Hori Knife:
Did you know that the name "Hori Hori" in Japanese roughly translates to "Dig Dig"? If you've ever used one of these tools you'll be nodding your head in agreement! It's no surprise that these soon become one of a gardener's favorite tools. These versatile digging machines have a narrow blade design and beveled edges which allows the blade to penetrate the soil with much less effort than a hand trowel.
The narrow shape also makes it easy to weed in between your plants and other tight spaces. The stout blade design and semi-sharpened edges allows for effective yet safe chopping of roots and plant material. It's also perfect for pounding gardening stakes or plant markers into the ground. This is one of our favorite gardening tools, and it's always on our belts.
There are many hori hori knives available today. We've chosen one that has all the features of the original design. However, lately many lightweight, thin stamped stainless steel blades with very sharp blades have come on the market. We don't recommend these for two reasons. First, the thinner blades don’t have the mass to dig and chop as effectively as the original thicker blades. Second, to make up for the lack of chopping power, these blades are sharpened to a slicing edge. We like sharp edges on knives, but not digging tools! Digging with a sharp edge can be dangerous and we know of several people that have cut themselves when their hand slipped onto the blade while digging. If you or a loved one has a hori hori with very sharp edges, please be aware of the potential for injury. Consider dulling the edge so that it chops but won't slice you badly if you slip. Gardening shouldn't hurt.
Or consider buying one of these traditional design hori hori knives that we sell. We bet you'll love it as much as we do!
Rūtsu Hori Hori Sheath
If you enjoy using a hori hori knife or you know someone who does, then you'll love this cleverly designed and beautifully handmade hori hori sheath. A nice upgrade from the flimsy factory sheaths, the Rūtsu Hori Hori Sheath is pleasing to the eye and made to last. It's hand crafted for strength and durability from natural poplar and hemlock wood, and high quality latigo and chap leather.
The hidden spring retention system holds your knife securely with no need for additional retention snaps (that get in the way and can break or rust out) yet still allows for an easy one handed draw and re-sheathing. A big advantage when your hands are muddy or full of plants and seed packets! And the open bottom design is self-cleaning, shrugging off dirt and mud with ease.
The convenient snap on belt loop makes putting it on quick and easy so it's always with you when you need it. You'll never again be tempted to set your hori hori down on the ground "just for a minute" so you'll never be at risk of losing it. (This actually happens more often than you might think!)
As practical as it is beautiful, it may be the perfect way to increase your gardening pleasure and upgrade the hori hori you already have.
Sheath is designed to fit snugly on a 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) wide belt (not included in this listing). As an option, an additional snap can be added to ensure a snug fit on a 1-1/4" (3.2 cm) belt.
Fits most commonly available hori hori knives with blade width of 1-3/4" (4.4 cm) and length of 7" (17.8 cm) or less. However, in the unlikely event that your knife doesn't fit, the sheath may be returned in unused condition. Please review our policies page for details.
