This large felted wool pincushion is made with black wool and features an off-white wool flower and within it an olive green flower with an inner bright yellow wool circle and then a bright orange smaller flower in the center. All are beautifully accented with hand-stitching done with black pearl cotton. On the outside of the body of the pincushion there a straight running stitches done in bright yellow, bright orange and olive green to pick up the colors on the top. It is done penny-rug style, designed to show off the hand-embroidered stitches. This pincushion is stuffed with crushed walnut shells to keep your pins and needles clean. It is a solid pincushion designed to be used by the sewer and/or quilter in your family. It may also be used for decoration or a conversation piece, a modern-day version of the penny rug art of yester years.
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They then became small samples of primitive decorative needlework to be displayed on top of tables, dressers, and beds. Today they are works of art to be displayed anywhere in your house. My penny rug pincushions can be used as decoration or even memo holders at your desk.
I am intrigued by the materials used, the simple traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
