Item details

This traditional felted wool pincushion is made with a black wool and features an appliqued bright turquoise blue wool circle motif with a bright yellow wool floral motif and then yet another circle motif in black wool on the top. All are embellished with hand-embroidered stitches done with bright yellow, turquoise and black pearl cotton. The side of this penny rug style pincushion is simply accented with a simple running stitch done with bright yellow pearl cotton. It is stuffed with crushed walnut shells to keep your pins and needles sharp and clean. The walnut shell also ads weight to this item so it is sure to stay put on your craft table or favorite sewing spot!My penny rug pincushions are designed to be mini works of art and may be used for sewing or simply be used as decoration. Guaranteed they will be sure to be a conversation piece.

Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They had pennies sewn into them to weight them down and make them wear better, and hence their name. Eventually they became samples of decorative needlework and then came off the floor and were displayed on top of tables, dressers, and beds and furniture.

I am intrigued by the materials used, the simple but bold traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and take the time to create works of old-fashioned craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
