This over sized felted wool pincushion is made with a black wool and features an appliqued bright orange woool flower, with a lighter hand-dyed orange wool shadowing it with a purple circle medallion so typical of penny rug art with a bright blue floral medallion on top of the circle. All are beautifully accented with hand-embroidered stitches done with bright yellow, orange and turquoise embroidery thread. Green leaves support the beauty of this colorful flower, and around the body of the pincushion are straight running stitches done in bright yellow, orange and blue embroidery thread to provide simple embellishment. It is a very colorful piece and may be the perfect accent of color needed to brighten your room as my pincushions are not just for sewing. This pincushion is tightly stuffed with crushed walnut shells filling to keep your pins and needles clean and adds weight to its body to so it is sure to stay put on your craft table or favorite sewing spot! It will also be quite a conversation piece.
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. Pennies were often sewn into them to make them lay flatter and wear better. They then became small samples of decorative needlework and came off the floor and were displayed on top of tables, dressers, beds and even desks or shelves.
I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional simple folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. I have always loved needlework and truly love sewing these bright and embellished works of art, recreating beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
