This is a traditional black primitive penny rug pincushion. This blue flowered felted wool pincushion is created using blue colored "tabs" for petals around a yellow center that is accented with black blanket stitching, done by hand. This pincushion is stuffed with a crushed walnut shell filling to keep your pins and needles clean and sharp and will serve a sewer well!
Size: 4" round x 3.25" tall weight: 13 oz
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They became small samples of decorative needlework to be displayed on top of tables, dressers, and beds. I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. In my explorations of the medium I have experimented with various weights of wool, including felt, roving, fleece, and woven wools as well and I continue to explore hand dying. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
