Vintaj Patinas are opaque inks specially formulated by Ranger to adhere to metal. They create beautiful and durable patina effects, and easily clean up with water. I use these colorize both raw and age darkened brass (and will work with other metals), findings, embellishments, filigrees, and stampings for gorgeous jewelry and crafting projects. They can be blended and layered to create endless patina effects, and then heat set with a heating gun, for added durability. The patinas bond to the metal to give an enamel like appearance.
Available in a palette of 31 different hues and 4 different metallic patinas.. They can be blended and layered for endless results. They are sold in sets of three, where the color combinations were developed to emulate natural patinas that would occur over time, or sold separately for your convenience.
Patina Tips and Tricks
*The patinas are formulated to be permanent on metal–no sealing is necessary. To keep the color from lightening naturally with time, you can seal it if you want. I usually use washes with the glaze so I do not find this step necessary, unless I have used the wet sandpaper or reliefing block to expose some of the brass underneath the paint and I do not want the brass to darken with age.
* I usually use the colors as washes so the resulting effects look more natural. Don’t dilute the patinas with water, instead, use the Vintaj glaze to create a washed look. This also helps in blending colors since the patinas do dry very fast.
* A little goes a long way… I start with a small dab of patina, and add 2-3 times that amount of the Vintaj Glaze.
*The patina colors are blendable, so I often mix several colors to create more subtle blending effects, to create a more natural look.
*Use a paintbrush to apply the patina–and wash your brush with water right away.
*Don’t dilute the patinas with water. Instead, dilute them with the Vintaj glaze to create a washed look.
Using the Vintaj Glaze
The Vintaj Glaze can be used as a sealer (to preserve the patina color), or as a patina extender to dilute your colors and create a washed look. While the patinas are permanent on metal and don’t require sealing, keep in mind that everything has a tendency to lighten with wear over time. If you want to preserve the look of your patina, seal your piece with a glaze after it finishes drying and after using the metal reliefing block.
Fast drying satin finish. No acids and UV safe. Conforms to ASTM D-4236. Made in USA.
