Item details

This beautiful Tuareg pendant is made from .999 silver and is inlaid with red and green enamel. This is a Fair Trade pendant created by a member of a co-op of artists in Mali.

Tuareg jewelry is often formed into a modified cross shape. It is thought to be a symbol of faith with the center of the cross representing God and man, and the four arms are to keep evil at bay.

The Tuareg are Berber people with a traditionally nomadic lifestyle. They reside in the Northern most part of Africa, primarily Mali, Niger and Morocco. They often wear protective amulets which contain verses from the Koran. Men also begin wearing a veil at age 25 which conceals their entire face excluding their eyes. This veil is never removed, even in front of family members. They differ from traditional Islam in that women are not veiled.

Much of their art work is in the form of their jewelry which has a very distinctive style.

Additional policies

Many of the things you will find in my shop are vintage, ethnic items. Please keep in mind that these are often made by primitive people under primitive circumstances and are rarely what we would consider to be perfect. There may be mismatched jewels, a definite patina and often there are irregularities in the metal. This is common and should be expected with this type of jewelry. I leave the patina in place for those who prefer an aged appearance. Most items can be polished with a mild jewelry cleaner if that is your preference.
