Lightning Ridge Opal 8 x 6 mm Oval Cut Gemstone Cabochon Weighs 0.95 Carats-AMAZING PLAY Of COLOR-October Birthstone
This is AAA+ CREAM OF THE CROP black opal from the Lightning Ridge mines of Australia. With its dark background, the play of color is enhanced by the contrast of the background color with the colors making up the visible light spectrum. There are different types of black opal. Some show opalescence with basically one or two colors such as green or blue, some exhibit play of color known as "flashfire" or "broadflash" which shows many colors of the rainbow in large splashes and patches of color. Then there is "pinfire" black opal where you will see many different colors, however the areas of color are smaller dot-like areas or more uniform small disffuse areas of color. Flashfire is the most coveted type of opalescence (play of color) and the most sought after dominant colors are (in order of descending value) red >>>> green & blue > violet & indigo > orange >>> yellow. Opals with mostly red play of color (red dominance) are the most sought after thus are the most expensive of all opals. Everyone though has their own color preferences and the great thing about opal is that you can always find that opal that really suits your fancy.
This particular black opal triplet exhibits phenomenal mixed "pinfire" and "broadflash" play of color (opalescence). It is a spectacular optical phenomenon that you can clearly see in the photos I have included. I also took pics of this opal in different light settings to show how the light source can affect the colors. Photos #1, 3 & 5 show the stone in overhead fluorescent lighting. Photos #2 and 4 show the stone under incandescent light. This opal has very strong play of color regardless of how strong or weak the lighting is. That is when you know you have a very high quality piece of opal. This material is AAA+ grade.
This oval cut triplet cabochon gemstone measures 8 x 6 mm and weighs 0.95 carats which is actually quite a nice size for an opal. It would make a gorgeous pendant, wire wrapping, ring or any other form of jewelry. If you are a gemstone collector, it is a MUST HAVE for your personal collection.
Opals are often formed into what are called "doublets" and "triplets". In a doublet, you will have a section of authentic opal attached to either its host rock or commonly obsidian (two layers). In triplets, you have the host rock with a layer of authentic opal then a layer of protective clear material most often ultra clear quartz (three layers). Triplets are actually better than doublets because they offer protection through the top layer from issues such as dehydration, crazing, and mechanical damage. DO NOT CONFUSE TRIPLET OPALS WITH RECONSTRUCTED OPALS. Triplets are actually commonplace and are the safest way to purchase authentic opal material. In reconstructed opals, very small, thin sections of opal (sometimes not even real opal but lab created material) are pressed together in a mosaic pattern. It is very obvious to tell the difference visually between triplets and reconstructed opals.
Triplets are the way to go when purchasing opals for jewelry making. Again, as described above, the reasons are that due to the high water content of opal, if they are not protected with a layer of clear quartz, they will dry out thus losing their play of color. If an opal dries out, then a phenomenon called "crazing" can occur. Crazing is the diffuse cracking of the surface of an opal and once it occurs, it is irreversible and the gemstone is ruined. Triplets not only give the opal material protection from dehydration and crazing, but also protects this rather soft and brittle gemstone against mechanical damage such as bumping and knocking which is most common with rings but with triplets you really do not have to worry about creating rings with them.
Opal, regardless of type or color, is one of two officially recognized birthstone gems for the month of October. This gemstone would make a wonderful birthstone gift for anyone.
A WORD OF CAUTION: NEVER CLEAN YOUR OPAL WITH ANYTHING OTHER THAN VERY MILD DISH SOAP AND WARM WATER USING AN ULTRA SOFT TOOTHBRUSH. RINSE WITH WARM WATER AND ALLOW TO AIR DRY OR PAT DRY. DO NOT USE ANY CHEMICALS YOU MIGHT HAVE ACQUIRED THROUGH A JEWELRY STORE. OPAL IS SO SOFT AND BRITTLE THAT MANY JEWELRY CLEANING AGENTS WILL ACTUALLY DISSOLVE THE GEMSTONE AND PERMANENTLY DAMAGE IT.

Shipping & policies
My shipping rates are a flat fee of 4.50 for the first item and 0.99 for each additional item in the same order. This covers all the costs of envelopes, packaging material, handling fees and trips to the post office. Unfortunately, the USPS has raised their rates on ALL domestic and international packages by over 35 percent as of Thursday, January 31, 2018. I sincerely apologize for the shipping rate increase but is beyond my control.
If you are an INTERNATIONAL BUYER, please contact me prior to checkout so I can look up the correct postage for your particular country. Sometimes there are issues with the customs agency of your country, so expect that there might possibly be a delay in delivery of your item. Please note, once a package leaves the United States, there is nothing I can really do to find out exactly where your package might be. If there is an issue, please use the customs number I provided with your order and contact your country's customs agency to find out when you may expect to receive your item.
Additionally, for both domestic and international orders, please understand that I cannot be held responsible for incorrectly delivered packages, stolen packages or items lost by the United States post office or your country's postal service. In these cases, I will do my best to work with you to locate your package with the tracking number provided by USPS or in international shipping cases the customs number for your package. This also includes items being returned to me for refunds or exchanges as well.
Most of my jewelry is inexpensive so insurance is not necessary however some more expensive items, ie. emeralds, ruby, tanzanite, morganite and sapphires, & some of the vintage coins must be insured. PLEASE NOTE: Insurance and tracking fees have already been calculated in the shipping costs you see posted for any items requiring insurance. All items with a value over $100 will be insured for both the buyer's and seller's protection.

Thank you for taking the time to read and understand my shop policies.
All the best!
All items purchased from my shop carry a 30 day warranty. Any item found to be damaged within 30 days of original receipt date will either be replaced (if possible) or a refund given for the full purchase price including shipping costs.
PLEASE NOTE: Items that are deemed to be damaged by improper handling or cleaning on the part of the purchaser are not covered under this warranty.
It is highly advised that you inspect your gemstone or jewelry piece very carefully immediately upon receipt because after the thirty day warranty period expires from the original receipt date, I cannot issue any refunds or exchanges for any purchase of any kind. This is in part due to the large number of attempted scams that force me to strictly adhere to this policy.
I have included some tips and pointers below to aid you in taking better care of your merchandise and specific cleaning techniques to help minimize potential damage occurring to your jewelry or gems.
Many of my gemstone jewelry items can be fragile if not protected from knocks and bumps due to their hardness scores on the Moh's scale. Care must be taken by the buyer to protect against damage especially rings as they are the type of jewelry most susceptible to damage and softer, more brittle gemstones, for example, opals and gemstones with lower Moh's numbers.
Care must also be taken when cleaning certain gemstones. Never use ANY harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaning on ANY items purchased from my shop. Using plain mild soap and warm water with an ultra soft toothbrush is the best cleaning method. This will help avoid damage to the gemstones used in creating some of my jewelry items and the gemstones themselves.
If you have any additional questions on how to take care of and protect your specific gemstone or jewelry piece, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be more than happy to share my knowledge with you.
ENJOY YOUR PURCHASE!!!!
