Item details

This is the junior version of the super carry-all Sling Tote design. It will carry all the essential stuff like teddy and a snack and will fit picture books from the library with no problem. All this and it will spread the load on your child’s shoulder with a comfy wide strap.

My inspiration for the original adult design was those baby slings you see that distribute the baby’s weight across one shoulder with a super wide strap – no more cutting into your shoulder or groaning under the weight.

I thought about adapting it to child size when I saw some of the library bags and gym bags that young school children are lugging around. They either get dragged along the ground or they have a nasty thin little strap that cuts into one shoulder. This bag keeps hands free, stuff off the ground, and the wearer comfortable. A great little last minute pattern to rely on for the kids to take as a present to birthday parties as you can adapt for a boy or a girl. Girls are easy - a bit of pink with a sweet print will make any little girl happy. For boys, toughen it up with camouflage print or navy stripes and applique a dinosaur print or cut out a pirate shape from felt.

Small: The sash from shoulder to hip is approx 20". The square body part of the bag is 17" across and 9" high.
Medium: The sash from shoulder to hip is approx 23". The square body part of the bag is 21" across and 11.5" high.

For this pattern you will need 84cm (33”) of a medium weight fabric for the outside of the bag – this allows for a one way design on the fabric and assumes the fabric is 118cm (46 ½”) wide. These measurements are based on the medium sized bag. You will also need 84cm (33”) of a lighter weight fabric for the bag lining – the same fabric amounts apply as above. All seam allowances have been included in the pattern pieces and are ¼” unless otherwise stated.

The pattern is supplied to you as two PDF files. One containing the instructions with colour pictures and tips to get you through. The other is a printer friendly file for the pattern itself. All pattern pieces have been carefully and accurately hand drawn with plenty of easy to read labelling. Just print on A4 or US Letter size paper and sticky tape the sheets together at the edges. Specific instructions are not provided for the applique on the front of the pictured bag but I generally spray the back of the shape with fabric glue and then zig zag around the edge of the shape to hold in place. These files are now available for instant digital download but I am still available to assist you at teapotandsnail [!at]

I am happy for you to sell your finished bags on Etsy as long as you credit Teapot & Snail as the designer on your page and do not mass produce the bag.

Great tote! I used this to make a postal bag for my son who wanted to be a mail carrier for Halloween. The medium was the perfect size for my 11-year-old to hold his candy and a jacket.
