This original design can be made using sashiko stitching (a traditional Japanese technique), redwork or appliqué. The motifs include a scalolp, whelk, sand dollar, horseshoe crab, starfish, crab, sea turtle, nautilus, and sea horse.

Thread and Fabric suggestions: Traditional Japanese sashiko is stitched with white sashiko thread on loose weave indigo fabric. In the sample wallhanging, I used three indigo squares with white sashiko thread, three medium blue squares and three white squares with dark blue sashiko thread.
Border fabric: 3/4 yard (more if directional fabric)
Sashing fabric: 1/3 yard
Blocks: 1/3 yard each from 3 fabrics
Binding: 1/2 yard
Backing: 1 yard plus 1/4 for accent strip
Thread: 1 skein white sashiko thread, one skein dark blue sashiko thread
or: red cotton embroidery thread or pearl cotton for redwork
