This original sashiko design pattern has a combination of traditional Japanese motifs (can waves, sea grass and mist), and sashiko inspired crest designs (a lighthouse, scallop, sailboat) and violets, sand dollars and dragonflies, all evoking our rhode Island home.
Traditional Japanese sashiko is stitched with white sashiko thread on loose weave indigo fabric. In the sample wallhanging, I used one indigo square with white sashiko thread, one medium blue square and one sea foam square both with dark blue sashiko thread. While it is possible to use embroidery floss, sashiko thread is matte, not shiny, and is one stand, not several together. The other fabrics were chosen to complement the sashiko designs - sand dollars, scallop and waves.
