Original card of unused antique washing buttons in several sizes. This is a wonderful card of buttons now becoming rarer and highly sought after. These buttons were used on household linen and underwear during the late 19th century. They were made using a metal frame either zinc or brass and then covered with white cotton fabric. They were first introduced during the industrial revolution and the mass production of these buttons wiped out the small cottage industry of hand made buttons in various parts of the UK. Dorset Buttons being one of the victims. They were designed and made to be quite flat in order that they would easily pass through the rollers of mangle during Washing. They are fine to go through modern washing machines and dryers and they dye beautifully.
