This is a gimlet. It is like a drill but the speed and forces needed to make a hole by hand are not needed as in a conventional drill. The tip has a screw that pulls the auger into the wood allowing it to make a hole where needed. This auger will make a 1/4 inch hole at the very most. It is tapered from tip to base. From the tip to the top of the handle is 7 3/8 inches. The width of the handle is 1 5/8 inches wide. The handle from top to bottom is 3 1/2 inches long and the length if the auger is just over 4 inches. This particular auger does not have any markings of any kind. There is a handle is attached to the bit via a rivet. These are great when you need to make a hole with out the use of mechanical instruments. I keep one in my pack when I go backpacking.
