Item details

This product was part of the 2016 Make For Good collection, a project powered by Etsy sellers from Australia and New Zealand in support of Plan International’s Because I Am A Girl campaign.

The theme for the Make For Good 2016 collection was “Creating a Brighter Future.” I designed a range of garments for young girls, aged 3 months to 3 years that are bright and fun. The Betty Bonnet pattern complements my other designs, and I have graded it to older child and adult sizes also- enjoy sewing!

Styling tips!

I decided on a colour scheme and then bought a few metres of poplin in each colour. Poplin is cheap and light, and handles well when sewn. This way I could make a collection of garments in different colours, which still resulted in a coordinated look when worn together. By the time I designed this bonnet, I had added in a few prints as well- I love the florals!

So many fabrics are suitable for this hat, including up-cycling options. Consider using second-hand shirts, or even sheets! Mix and match colours and patterns for inside and outside of the bonnet. Make it your own!

Sewing expertise:

Advanced beginner- only basic sewing skills required.

Estimated time to complete:

2 hours

Designed for:

All ages.

Materials required:

Non-stretch light-weight fabric (such as poplin, broadcloth, shirting, voile, linen and linen blends)
Matching thread
Overlocker not necessary
Medium-to-heavy weight interfacing
Small amount of fusing desirable
Ties can be made from fabric, or you may chose to use ribbons or lace.
Ribbon or lace trim can also be added to the brim if desired.
A safety clip (or release buckle) is recommended if making for a child- these are available online.

Seam allowance:

0.5cm (3/16 inch) included in pattern.
This is different to a standard seam allowance, as the smaller seam allowance makes easing in curves less tricky!

NOTE: This is not a final product. It is a digital pattern in PDF from, which will be available for printing immediately after purchase. It is formatted to print on A4 paper, but the margins are large enough that it will work in American letterhead size paper also- just make sure you print the test square page first.
