One of the kinds of historical items I like best. When art, commerce and news of the day converge. To leave us this little moment captured in time. For us to figure out and appreciate.
This postcard and its charming imagery actually belie a grim fact. It references the North Pole Expedition of Robert E. Peary. This was quite a feat that is well worth studying. He of course used sled dogs as a method of transport.
And let's just say they didn't fare so well.
Only 8 of the 20 dogs that began in Greenland made the Eastern crossing. Only 5 of the dogs survived the expedition.
A sweet (?) and topical reference. Or just a cute card suggesting that Rover doesn't like the Winter Freeze. Up to your own perspective and point-of-view...!
