Here we have a near mint copy of: 'Church Embroidery and Church Vestments' by Lucy Vaughan Hayden Mackrille - head of Washington Cathedral Altar Guild. Hardcover. 126 pages. Profusely illustrated B&W. A complete and practical guide to this fascinating art. Copyright 1939. Second Edition. Cathedral Studios, Chevy Chase, Maryland. 10 1/4 inches high, 8 1/4 inches across.
This book is an exploration the traditions and artistry involved in creating altar textiles and vestments. First published in 1939, this is the second edition, which includes an essay dated 1947 about difficulties encountered in producing these artworks in a post war economy.
Lovely lavender boards, never had a dust jacket, almost no wear. The pages are ivory, flexible, perfect. There is a bookplate from a previous owner and a sticker from the Episcopal Book Store of Richmond, Virginia. What a great gift!
In addition to this volume I will include several interesting pages from some other source with illustrations of ecclesiastical embroideries, comments on the illustrations and Reflections. (picture 5)
