"Thumper," a wood joinery mallet, will find many uses around the house, shop, and yard, whether for a tap or a whack. Good for "some assembly required" gifts under the tree, tightening furniture, sinking a stake in the yard, other occasions for "persuasion." Makes a great gift for special occasions, including Mother's and Father's Days and retirements.
Fourteen inches long, Thumper weighs in at 19 ounces. The finish is clear urethane varnish.
The head of this beautiful joinery mallet is made of Calico Ash, a variety that contains light and dark streaks.* The handle is walnut. The structure is based on a sandwich, or trap, mortise in which the head is built around the handle (tenon) as opposed to chopping the mortise from a single block.
The handle is wedged tight but removable. Buyer may request that it be permanently fixed, which is a simple matter of adding a few dabs of wood glue. This mallet is close, in size and appearance, to the mallet pictured but is not the same mallet.
*Due to the Emerald Ash Borer, ash is a rapidly disappearing species in the U.S., much like the elm, which virtually vanished in the middle of the last century. Craft products of this sort will represent the legacy of the ash tree.
