The oldest mine in the USA is in the Cerrillos Hills, just happens to be a turquoise mine, this was learned by carbon dating some of the tools at the site. This turquoise is the only mine found to be near recently active volcanoes. The uniqueness of Cerrillos turquoise cannot be understated. Over 50 colors occur that have been tested and confirmed, this more than likely is the result of the volcanic activity in the area.
