This is a very handsome over-sized traditional primitive penny-rug flower pincushion and is created by stitching primitive colored wool "tabs" to a black wool center hand appliqued to the top of this pincushon. This pincushion is stuffed with a crushed walnut shell filling to keep your pins and needles clean and sharp or it can be used as a decoration, paper weight or as an attractive note holder by simply pinning your reminders to it. Whatever you might use it for, it will be a conversation piece as well.
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They became small samples of decorative and well-stitched hand-done needlework to be displayed on top of tables, dressers, beds and even desks. I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft.
In my explorations of this primitive needle artwork I have experimented with various weights of wool, and I continue to explore hand dying. I have always loved needlework and love embellishing my work with fine hand sitiching and embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
This piece is a more simple sort of pattern whose well-chosen primitive colors all hand-stitched with tiny little stitches to the top of this pincushion exemplify the beautiful needle art of yester years.
