This listing is for a traditional primitive penny rug pincushion. It features a a traditional penny rug circle motif done in black and olive green felted wools. All decorative stitching is done by hand. This pincushion is stuffed with a crushed walnut shell filling to keep your pins and needles clean and sharp and its weight keeps your pincushion well-planted! It is a handsome pincushion and will make an interesting conversation piece as well.
Penny Rugs were originally made from recycled wool and used as doormats in the early 1800's. They then became fancier needlework art and were lifted off the floor. They became a way of a woman demonstrating her sewing and embroidery skills and were small pieces designed to decorate her home and were displayed on top of tables, dressers, beds and even desks. My pincushions can be used as such or some have even used them to post reminder notes to themselves.
I am intrigued by the materials used, the traditional folk art designs and the functional aspects of this traditional craft. I have always loved needlework and truly love embellishing my work with hand embroidery, recreating the beautiful stitches of bygone days. I strive to use heirloom quality materials and craftsmanship. If you have any questions about my work, or materials please feel free to contact me.
