This is my favorite release agent. It's a Mann product. The data sheet says it's for releasing various elastomers like polyurethane rubber, from basically any substrate or mold material. But it also does fine with epoxies and polyesters and gypsum cements and anything else I've tried it with. It's very similar (if not the same) as Mann Ease Release 400 which only comes in a spray can. This is much more cost effective and I think safer (because you're not putting as many VOCs in the air). I bought a gallon of it quite some time ago and there's still over half a bottle. I put it in a pint squirt bottle, and then just squirt some on the mold surface and quickly wipe it around with a brush or piece of paper towel. A little bit goes a long way. It spreads (wets the surface) very readily and it leaves a very smooth, invisible layer of release agent which can last several casting cycles, depending on what you're casting. It's not super shinny but neither is it "flat"
This stuff gets a 2, 3, 0 on the NFPA Diamond (Health, Fire, Reactivity are what the numbers refer to). That's why I'm only selling 15 grams in a dropper bottle. If you're familiar with painter's naphtha (basically a faster evaporating paint thinner), that's the carrier that's in this. I'm not sure what the active agent in it is because they keep that a trade secret. It could be some low percentage of silicone. I don't notice the parts coming out of the mold with any kind of slippery silicone feel. It does "dry", unlike some silicone release agents which leave a very thin liquid film. The fact that it dries makes me think it's a wax based release agent. If so, it's a very effective one. But the fact that it wets the surface so well makes me think it has some silicone in it. It's probably a combination of the two.
Here are some links for it (the top one is for ER 400 but also has some data on 405):
http://www.mann-release.com/erelese4.htm
http://www.theengineerguy.com/EASE-RELEASE-405.html
The 2nd link says this about 405:
"Ease Release 405 is a highly efficient release agent designed to release polyurethane elastomers, Thiokol rubbers, EPDM and other synthetic elastomers from aluminum, chrome, epoxy, polyester, rubber and steel molds.
Ease Release 405 is easy to apply, fast drying and effective over a broad temperature range from 70°F to 500°F.
Ease Release 405 provides excellent release and surface finish to molded parts. Ease Release 405 also provides multiple release in many instances. Precise duplication of mold detail and dimension with minimum mold maintenance and down time resulting in greater productivity."
I think Smooth-On owned Mann for a while, or maybe still does. Smooth-on pushes Ease Release 200 and 205. I see ER 200 around the web a lot, but the 2nd link above does still sell ER 405.-

FAQs

I'm sorry, but at this time we do not ship internationally.

If you would like a smaller or larger quantity of a raw material, click the "Request a custom order" button and tell us how much you would like. Or just contact us and let us know what you'd like. We'll get back to you ASAP.

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. Where possible, we're converting to calculated shipping. We originally didn't provide it because we sell so many dissimilar items (size, weight, etc), that it would not be possible to do it accurately. If your shipping cost is high, you can do one of the following: If you see "Request a Custom Order", "Contact", or "Ask a Question" on an item's page, you may use it to request a reserved listing. You may copy and paste a list of the items in your cart, send a screen shot of your items, or simply favorite them, and request a "reserved" or "custom" order. Or you may do nothing. We will see your multiple items & will always refund excess shipping charges before shipping your items.

If you have a technical question about an item we've listed, please don't hesitate to ask. We enjoy helping people out with a material or a process. We give anecdotal information in our listings if we have any. If you disagree with it or think we're being inaccurate or misleading please let us know that, too. If there are discrepancies in any of our listings let us know, we make mistakes like everybody and we'd like to be set straight and get those mistakes corrected.
