The Goober Pea Pod is a size adjustable car seat cape/poncho pattern, designed especially for those who dislike spending money every year on new fabric for a well-fitting poncho. The result is a gorgeous and extremely versatile cape with snap on hoods in 3 sizes. The various neck hole sizes allow a close but comfortable fit, eliminating gaping that lets in the cold air.

Please note, you will need snap pliers and snaps to make this project, and the number of snaps to install can seem overwhelming at first (20 sets for the cape and 6-10 sets per hood, depending on size). However, the benefits of versatility and functionality are well worth it. It may take some playing around to figure out the right combination to achieve the best fit for your child. But, once you have the right combo, you can leave most of the snaps together, and only undo a few on one side of the hood in order to slip it over the child's head. There are detailed instructions and photos included for not only the snap installation, but also which snaps to match together for each sizing combination.

The Goober Pea Pod comes with the following options:

-the cape comes in regular or extra tall lengths. Regular would fit a petite child from newborn right up through 5 yrs. Extra tall would be a bit long for most walking 12 month olds, but would give better leg coverage for most 2-5yr olds
-undo one of the snaps along the arm to create a "sleeve" for arms to come through
-the generous fitting snap on hoods come in sizes 0-12m, 2T-3T, and 4T-5T. The two smaller hoods can be adjusted (in how they attach to the cape) for a smaller or bigger neck hole depending on preference
-It can be made in warm and economical fleece, or luxurious minky/chenille.
-It can be made with 2 layers (outer and inner), or with a 3rd hidden layer of fleece in between.
-adorable bear ears can be added to the hoods
-snap covers can be made, to cover the snap studs along the back of neck, in order to wear the cape without a hood.
-there is an optional extra snap, which can be used to roll up the front of the cape and snap it to bottom corner of the hood, to keep it out of the way while you are doing up car seat buckles.
-NEW!!! ALTERNATE ZIPPERED CAPE OPTION! plus optional armholes! *If you previously purchased this pattern, please contact me for an updated file*

Loved this pattern and tutorial. I have sewn for many years. The directions are very clear. Thanks for the tip on using a walking foot. I used 2 layers of Luxe and it would have been very difficult without. My grandson and his parents live in an urban area and are out in the stroller very often. This is perfect for them.

Lots of info, but I made it simple one layer, sewed shoulders, hood, made a v neck to pull over. Thansk

The pattern was easy to put together and the instructions are explained well. I’ve made 2 ponchos from the pattern so far and I would say it isn’t for a novice sewer. The second one turned out much better than the first. Oh and snaps are freaking hard to put on so be warned of that!
