Black walnut is a hardwood tree native to the eastern US. They grow plentifully in upstate New York and provide one of the most lightfast and colorfast sources for brown dye. The wood is prized for its rich brown color, but we are after the lime-green nuts that drop from the trees in late summer and early fall. The green hulls provide a potent dye that bleeds yellow, oxidizes to dark brown and stains your hands for weeks if you are not careful! After peeling the hulls from the nuts, the nuts go back outside to be stashed away for the winter by squirrels.
All Blue Sheep Yarn Co. yarns are dyed naturally with plant dyes using sustainable and eco-friendly methods. Yarn is hand-dyed in small batches. We are committed to keeping our yarns and dyes local & earth friendly. Dye stuffs are mindfully foraged or grown locally whenever possible.
Some fading may occur with everyday use. Color may run in the first few washes. We suggest you hand-wash your finished items separately in cold water with pH neutral soap. Roll in a towel to squeeze out excess water & lay flat to dry.
Hand dyed, small-batch yarns are naturally variegated and will have slight color variations. White, light and dark spots are common. This gives our yarn a wonderfully rustic look that we love! However, if you are using multiple skeins for a project we suggest you work the new skein into your project by alternating at least 5 rows of the new skein with 5 rows of the old skein to blend any possible slight color changes between skeins.
All weight and yardage calculations are approximate & may vary slightly, however we do our best to err on the side of caution.
