2 Antique Spandrels, Oval Openings, 1 Hand-Carved Grape & Leaf Motif, Flemish Art, Pyrography, 1 Honey-Toned Oak, Original Finish c.1900
2 Antique Spandrels with Oval Openings, One Hand Carved Flemish Art Pyrography/One Honey Oak c.1900 .
Flemish Art spandrel: Flemish Art pyrography was a craft in the early 1900s. The materials came in a kit. It used a technique of drawing on wood and then using a small "torch" to etch the designs into the wood. Then the pieces were varnished or polished in some way. This spandrel has a matte finish. They were often done as souvenirs on voyages or keepsakes for a loved one.
Sometimes, people didn't use the patterns, but used the tool to do totally original designs.
Inside oval opening: 3.75" x 5.75"
Outside dimensions: 7.5" x 9"
Inside oval opening: 4" x 5.5"
Inside rectangular area: 5.25" x 7.25"
Outside: 9.5" x 11.5"
This has its original satin finish.
The oak spandrel can be used on its own as a frame...or could be set inside another frame. It does have slightly rounded edges, which is a lovely design element which would be covered if put inside another frame. The Flemish Art spandrel has a bit of missing wood in one small section. It would probably be completely covered by whatever frame is used for the art. This spandrel must be set into another frame.
Our Antique/Vintage Frame Story:
We have been collecting antique and vintage picture frames for over 30 years.
We love being able to use an authentic vintage or antique frame for a work of art created in the same era.
The care, attention and skill that is evident in the construction of these frames is quite amazing. The patterns are very varied…simple, elegant Arts & Crafts and Art Deco or very elaborate Victorian embossed and carved florals and other patterns. Classic mahogany, sometimes accented by clean black insets or enhanced by gilt fillet inserts, are among the other choices.
As we collected the frames, we "upleveled" them by strengthening corners, cleaning, polishing, etc. We consider them "ready to use".
All are authentic and have been used at some point in their history. Some have what would be called "imperfect" aspects...tiny scratches or dents…but they have been upleveled in one way or another …not to be "fake" new…but maintain the character of their years.
I have tried to photograph so the essence of them is clear…Please let me know if you need to see more images as I often have extras.
These are the real deal! And, as often as I can, I combine in groups of related styles so that it is a better value to ship them.
Please note that we are offering this frame as an antique. We don't supply glass or backing, as custom framing needs differ based on the art.
We pack VERY carefully.
Absolutely no musty or stale odor whatsoever.
Since there are different costs to ship different items depending on weight, etc., we feel the fairest thing to do for everyone is to quote combinations as they are requested.

My husband is the world's greatest packer.
One short story among many: We packed and shipped a framed photograph for a client. Her first comment was how much her father loved the gift. The second comment was that he said the packing was so amazing that he could have played touch football with the package and it would have been fine. Yes, he's that good.
We will endeavor to always be as fair as possible in determining rates. We try to keep shipping costs to a minimum, but we are not skimping on time or materials. Our shipping costs are a reflection of the balance we're attempting to achieve.
Payment may be made by Paypal, Etsy Payments, or money order.
Please add 8.875% tax if you are located in NY.

One more thing:
Since the latest round of post office increases (We LOVE the USPS and use it exclusively!), we have found that the shipping quotes on our items to the West Coast and Hawaii and Alaska (from Brooklyn, NY) have been too low and we have been losing on virtually every mailing. To redo all of the quotes on our listings would be a very difficult thing to do, so we are leaving the quotes as they are. But occasionally, we may have to alert a buyer in those areas that we might need to add some additional shipping cost. Of course, we would notify if that is the case and it would be up to the buyer to accept or not. I'm not comfortable with this outcome, but losing on each purchase is too much for such a small family business. We hope that you understand.
