day one - the snow was getting heavier and deeper every step we took up the mountainside. our sherpa guide promised us we could set up the base camp soon. just when I thought I could not take one more step, the call to halt was given and the yaks that were carrying our supplies stopped in a protected space along a high cliff. quickly tents were unloaded and put up, a fire started and hot soup was being passed around to our small group of explorers. later as we settled down for the night, our guide warned us of the dangers we would face as we climbed higher in search of the allusive snow creature locals called the Yeti. avalanches, snow blindness, mountain sickness, deadly falls and frostbite were just some of the ones he rattled off fasted than I could write them down in my journal. as the wind picked up and begin to rattle our tent walls, a eerie howl was carried to our ears that sent shivers down my spine, could this be our first proof that our expedition would not be in vain? stories of Yeti cries that could be heard for miles filled my mind with excitement and it was a long time before sleep overtook me...
day two - we were up just as the first light of dawn could be seen along the distant peaks and as soon as a hearty breakfast was eaten our group made preparations for the days journey. climbing equipment, cameras, first aid and emergency supplies were all carefully packed on the back of one yak that would be accompanying us further up the trail to the lama's monastery where were to be guests for the night. several of the men would stay at the base camp and take care of the remaining pack animals until we arrived back in a few days. I made sure to have extra film, tape recorder and my journal as we started out. I would be responsible to document the stories that the lamas were eager to share about their encounters with a Yeti just a short while ago. the snow had stopped falling during the night and the sun shone down with blinding brilliance all around us. our guide warned us about staying close together on the trail but I lagged behind as I got my camera out to take a photo of a beautiful ice cave that I fancied could be the home of the great Yeti. all of a sudden our guide in the lead gave a shout and as I looked up my group was no where to be seen because looming not five feet from where I was standing was what could only be described as a giant abominable snowman!!!!! frozen in fear for what seemed like an eternity, I stood unable to move or speak. then like breaking free from a nightmare, I turned my eyes away from the creature, dropped my backpack and ran wildly away without any thought of where I was going until my last step sent me falling through endless snow further and further down the edge of the mountain but at least away from the terrifying monster....
fun facts: I always thought the abominable snowman was white but all of the drawings of him in this kit of he or she has dark fur. all the better to capture a photo against the bright white snow!!!!!! my favorite image in this kit is the guy taking a picture of his friends!
grab your camera, snow shoes and climbing equipment because we are going on a monster hunt!!! It's time to prove once and for all that the abominable snowman, Yeti, Alma or what ever you like to call him really does exist. not that there is any doubt for us true believers but just to make the naysayers speechless we are coming back with proof!
special notes about this kit: this is only the second abominable snowman kit I have ever been able to make. some images have handling wear, light soil and one has a hole punch which adds to the vintage experience. you get the whole story from the 1957 Jack and Jill magazine entitled the mystery of the footprints on the mountain. package size is 10 x 7 inches approx.
