The “Empress” English Paper Piecing pattern is a geometric design inspired by one of my favorite coloring books. Since there are only two basic shapes that make up the motif, it’s a great project for beginners, or more seasoned sewists who want the challenge of creating intricate or “fussy cut” designs. The design lends itself well to fabrics that include zig zags, diamonds, stripes and other prints that can create continuous designs across multiple shapes. The templates included with this pattern can be enlarged or reduced to suit the particular fabrics you’ve chosen, so customize to your heart’s content!
I have included a coloring page for you to use to try out different color combinations before you start cutting (or even buying) your fabric. Use your favorite coloring tools to fill in the shapes. Print as many as you need to find the look you want. At the end of the pattern, I have included two alternate designs that can be created using the same shapes and layout (see final image above to see one). Feel free to try those out as well.
- Approximately 1/4 yard of fabric in at least two colors/prints (for a finished piece containing 61 diamonds, 144 kites, 10 half diamonds, and 10 split diamonds measuring about 14.5” x 14.5” when finished). More fabric may be needed if you increase the size of the paper pieces or fussy cut specific designs. - Rotary cutter and mat - Thin cardboard to make cutting templates - Printed templates (see pages 10-11 for printable templates) - Paper scissors - Fabric scissors - Thread (matching thread for sewing and contrasting thread for basting) - Hand-sewing needles - Clips (optional, but helpful)
