Item details

You will receive 1 or 2 live 2 foot tall topiary which grows to 6-10'. This tree is already trimmed and shaped with the leaves forming 2 balls. Eugenia is easily trained to a ball shape. Plants trained and trimmed into a topiary can be fun to grow, but it helps to have information about the care and needs of a topiary from the start. A Eugenia plant (Eugenia myrtifolium, or Syzygium paniculatum) is a good choice for a topiary because its small leaves and delicate branches respond well to training and shearing. This plant grows outdoors year-round in U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 10 and 11 but can also grow indoors in a container. Light Eugenia is quite resilient and requires little special care when given the right growing conditions. It can grow well in full sun outdoors, but in regions with hot summer sun, a spot that gets full sun for the morning hours, followed by partial shade in the afternoon, is ideal. It isn't a good choice for a fully shaded spot, where it tends to lose leaf color and become leggy, an undesirable growth habit for a topiary. When growing Eugenia as a container-plant indoors, keep it in a brightly lit, south- or west-facing window, or supplement its light with fluorescent lighting. Soil and Water An outdoor-grown Eugenia topiary thrives in any type of garden soil that's well-drained and does poorly in soil that tends to stay wet for long periods. If your soil is high in clay, adding sand at planting improves its drainage. For a container-grown plant, you can use any commercial potting soil or make your own from 1 part loam, 1 part compost and 2 parts sand. Eugenia is quite tolerant of dry spells once established, but regular watering during its first few seasons helps the plant develop a strong and deep root system. During extreme drought, watering the plant once weekly helps keep it growing well. Prune the topiary at least twice a year to maintain its shape. You can prune more often if necessary.
