Y. elephantipes is a large, upright shrub or small tree with several trunks growing from near ground level, sparsely branched. On mature plants the stiff, leathery leaves are narrow, have no spine at the tip (as with other type of Yucca e.g The Spanish Bayonet), up to 1m long, and flowering spikes up to 1m long appear in Summer and Autumn bearing large numbers of creamy-white, hanging flowers. Pruning is not normally needed, but damaged leaves and spent flower spikes can be removed as necessary in the Spring. Benefits from cool Winter conditions, but not frost hardy.
