This original sashiko design pattern includes a combination of traditional Japanese motifs (linked plovers and rising steam), a sashiko inspired crest design of cranberry flowers, and a New England Neptune Whelk shell, mayflowers, the Nauset lighthouse and a North Atlantic Right whale, all evoking the natural beauty of Massachusetts.
Finished size 24” wide x 40” high (without borders) 32 1/2" wide x 48 1/2" high (with borders)
1 yard sashiko or indigo cotton
Sashing: 1/4 yard red cotton (cranberry)
Border fabric (optional): 3/4 yard (you made need more if the fabric is directional)
Backing: 1 yard
Binding: 1/2 yard
While it is possible to use embroidery floss, I recommend sashiko thread because it is matte not shiny and is one strand, not several together.
1 skein each color sashiko thread: white, medium blue, light blue, red and green
