African Potato Mint (Plectranthus rotundifolius aka Solenostemon rotundifolius) is an Ancient Edible and Medicinal Herb....a Sustainable Food Crop...and a Beautiful Butterfly Host for the Engrailed Butterfly!
This Plectranthus forms a soft perennial groundcover and blooms on stalks so, so similar to a Blue Salvia that the Honey Bees are Fooled!
We provide a Bundle of Three (3) plants!
A Bit of Plant Culture...
This Plectranthus is a Historic Crop Plant of African and often referred to as one of the "Lost Crops"...It has many names and can be found in Northern Africa as Sudan Potato, Kaffir Potato, Zulu Potato or Hausa Potato. In Europe, it is commonly called Native Potato. Ancient cultures prized the Plant for it's Edible Tubers that can be roasted, baked or fried.
In the Sudan, the Foliage is also considered a valued leaf vegetable and eaten routinely or for medicinal purposes. Parts of the plant are variously high in protein, carbohydrate, iron and calcium. P. rotundifolius shares the properties of Forskolin with P. barbatus, which is commonly called False Baldo.
White this variety of Plectranthus has been used in Africa for centuries, it is rare to find it in the United States...and too often it is confused with many of it's "cousins" within the Plectranthus Botanical Family...Easy to do since there are more than 350 of them...and it used to include the now defunct family of Coleus!
As a Garden Plant, Plectranthus is often called Spurflower or Blue Spurflower...African Potato Mint enjoys High Shade and can spread through tubers in soft soil. It is a Herbaceous Perennial that behaves much as a mint does and even has the traditional mint stems and lovely scent to the Foliage.
The Blooming begins in late spring and continues through June for us here in Central Texas...Showy Lavender Blooms are attractive to multiple species of Bees, including Honey Bees and Bumble Bees. This species of Plectranthus is also a Host plant for the Engrailed Butterfly...
All of our plants are Organically Grown and Chemical Free.
Preparation and Shipping...

All plants are well-rooted and currently growing in 5" Deep Pots for deeper rooting than traditional 4" Herb Containers.
Excess soil will be removed prior to shipping. The roots will be wrapped in appropriate materials prior to shipment.
Each packet will be labeled with common and botanical name.
We ship in the Order of Paid Invoices...and while our goal is prompt shipment of all orders. However shipping delays can occur during period of High Sales (Spring Planting and Christmas) or due to periods of Severe Weather. We routinely do not ship some plants during the Heat of August. If in doubt as to the specific shipping date of the items you purchased, please send us a note!...
We welcome your messages or special requests. We attempt to respond to all messages promptly...sometimes, the response requires a bit of time to research.
Our Growing Philosophy....We propagate through seedlings, cuttings, and division of well-established plants. We do not use chemicals and allow the plant to establish root systems naturally. This may - or may not - create a smaller plant or a longer growing period than the 'Treated with Nitrogen' plants visible at Big Box Stores.
We do not grow hundreds of any one plant, but prefer to grow hundreds of different plants instead...Numbers of plants are often limited.
We offer many native varieties because we like them and strongly believe that the Heritage of Natives should be retained. We Never collect them from the wild. We grow them from cuttings or seeds from our own Garden and Property.
We ship with excess soil removed from the root system. The roots are wrapped in dampened materials and securely encased in plastic. Each plant is labeled as to the common and botanical names. We ship USPS. We have been using this method for more than 30 years and have found it to be highly reliable...
We routinely ship Plant Materials within the Continental USA. Alaska, Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands require additional shipping costs...and we will create a Designated Listing for your additional shipping and handling costs.
We can not replace or refund Plant, Seed or Cutting material that has been confiscated by a governmental agency...regardless of the reason. We can no longer maintain current information on State Regulations for Live Plant Shipment. It is the Buyer's Responsibility to know when a plant is considered "non-shippable" into their state.
Due to USDA regulations, we ship no plants, seeds, or cuttings to Hawaii.
You do not have to be home to receive your package as we do not require signatures. Neither do we mark the boxes with the contents because this gives the US Postal Service the option of non-delivery if no-one is home.
As soon as the plants have been packed and shipped, the buyer is provided with the Label or Tracking Number. we do follow tracking on our shipped items and consider the sale complete when the Tracking Information indicates the package/box was delivered safely by USPS.
Each Plant Sale is unique for us! Each is hand-inspected and hand-packed for shipment. We do not 'anticipate' shipping or purchase the Shipping Label in advance of Shipment. We carry each box to the United States Post Office for shipment to ensure prompt scanning and shipment...and routinely make trips to the Belton Post Office three days a week.
