Antique Wooden Trammel. Old Wood Wheelwright Trammel, and it Measures 34 1/2". I was told at an Estate Sale that this was a rather primitive Trammel. The fellow who knew about this tool told me then that it was used to draw or set up for drawing of circles. So, drawing circles makes sense when you are a Wheel Wright,or a clock maker and I am sure many other trades especially back in the day, so to speak. The top is stationary and the bottom can be moved to what ever size circle is needed.
The same gent told me that usually trammels are metal and the older ones are wooden but he also said this was one of the older, older ones because there was no screw like set up to tighten this Antique Wooden Trammel. This is a solid and fine looking tool.
I believe to tighten this one, all you would have to do is slide something on the bottom that is long and will hold its place till it is pulled out again. I have never heard of this tool before. The fellow that told me about the trammel was a retired tool and dye maker.
