My shop focuses on beads with a story. While I do make my own ceramic beads, I absolutely love finding audiences for some of my favorite artists. I've loved promoting Bob's beads for several years now, and that interest has not waned. Bob began making porcelain and ceramic beads in 1972 and 1973 to be featured in his wife's macrame' baskets, back in the day. Eventually, though, he embarked on a career, one from which he retired about five or so years ago. Out came the beads from the attic, a visit to Gahanna Bead Studio by Bob, a trunk show, and the rest, as they say, is history. I love his vintage beads because they are earthy and organic and pair well with not only my own ceramic focals and the handmade Moroccan and Greek beads that I sell, but also with all manner of other, commercial beads. Recently Bob has begun a new foray into making beads that he wants to resemble trade beads, and his favorite technique is Nerikomi, an ancient Japanese technique which focuses on coloring the clay before it's formed, rather than glazing it afterwards. These are an example of that technique. Because they are so unique, your jewelry will take on a signature look when you feature his beads in your work. I encourage you to give his beads a try! You can weave them into baskets, string them on beading wire, hemp, ribbon, chain or anything else that will fit through the somewhat biggish holes. They'll even work on hair, to the extent that the hole size is large enough.
Alpine Ride: Fat tube beads marbled in the ancient Japanese Nerikomi method, blue and white. The beads in this lot of beads measure approximately 10mm x 16mm, with a 3-4 mm hole. Since these were individually handmade, measurements will vary. You will receive eight beads in the pattern shown, though not these exact beads. I mix these with wood, sterling silver, bronze, semi-precious stones, and anything else I can get my hands on. They are simply wonderful!
