Item details

This Pineapple Crush yellow tinge mother of pearl shell cabochon has been double drilled with 1.5mm holes either side so you can make a bracelet, cuff or wrap from it using cord.

Who couldn't help but have a crush on this little masterpiece that reflects the light so beautifully from all those facets and the nacreous iridescence at its core?

Mother of pearl shell, also known as nacre, is strong and resilient, making it more difficult to carve but also more enduring in jewelry.

Beautifully crafted by a Balinese artisan, this textured piece measures about 25mm in length - about half the size of some delicious big cabs that I have in separate listings.

Please see scroll through my photos to see different views of this little gem. (Click the arrows on the left or right or the photo to scroll through the various images.)

This listing is for one piece only. There's one piece with 2mm holes.

Because each piece is done by hand, there may be very slight variations between them. Mostly it will be to do with how the spikes are arrange at the top.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

Tropical fruits are in bountiful supply in Bali, and it's just as well because they are used abundantly in ritual offerings to the gods on the predominantly Hindu island.

Towers of fruit and cakes sit beautifully balanced atop the heads of women clad in equally colourful sarong and kebaya as they make their way gracefully to and from the temple for major ceremonial occasions - just one of the many breathtaking scenes you'll see if you are lucky enough to visit Bali.

In case you've ever wondered how all those apples and oranges and salak (snakefruit) and mangosteens and pineapples stay in place, each piece is securely skewered to the trunk of a young banana tree that sits at the core of the arrangement, known as gebogan.

Poise is what keeps it all in perfect place on the head of each woman. At the temple, a pemangku (priest) sprinkles these offerings with holy water to ceremonially remove any impurities.

In prayer, the priest and the bearers offer the essence of these arrangements to the gods and deified ancestors. Once their sari or function has been fulfilled, the fruit and cakes are taken back on the heads of the women, and shared with family and friends.

It's a wonderful coincidence that the gods love these fruits and cakes just as much as the Balinese do.

In Bahasa Indonesia, the word for fruit is buah, and the word for pineapple is nanas.
“One is wise to cultivate the tree that bears fruit in our soul” ~ Henry David Thoreau
