Very large Black Coral cabochon. This is one of 12 cabochons that came from a single large branch section of a black coral tree harvested from the waters off Maui sometime in the '60s or '70s.
You'll note in the photos that one is of a rough-cut piece before grinding and polishing. That photo is intended to show the cavities within the tree structure before white pigmented epoxy is applied. That is the traditional way of highlighting these cavities. You might also note that the rough slice is very similar to the polished cabochon. That is because it was the adjacent slice on
The cavities within black coral branches are similar to growth rings in trees. The cab in this listing features a single large ring pattern.
The rough piece in the one photo above is NOT part of this sale. This sale is for the polished cabochon only.
Black coral is a fabulous material to work with. You can drop a piece of it and it won't break. It is not brittle like rock. You can cut it with a jeweler's saw, band saw or hacksaw. It can be carved or cabochon cut. It takes a superb polish with conventional jewelry buffing compounds.
To be clear, this is a solid cross-section of a branch of a black coral tree. This is not epoxy-infused black coral dust, as is the case with black coral figurines.
A Hawaiian antipatharian black coral cabochon this size is extremely rare. I could lay a bunch of lore and legend on you about black coral, rarity, scarcity, et cetera, but if you're interested in this cab, you'll do the research.
This cabochon would make a stunning pendant, bolo tie or bracelet.
