Item details

Oh Boy. This yarn. This fleece, a very dark soft shiny charcoal Shetland just NEEDED to be spun into the finest singles and then plyed into a sport weight. Something I never do. The time spent processing with my fleeces up to this point, I'm getting familiar with the structure and texture of the fiber. It seriously told me what to do with it. And when this happens, I have to listen.

I hope you enjoy working with this as I much I did making it. This yarn will really shine best when made into a next to skin garment. Plain and simple. I beg you, please do not use this for tapestry weaving. A baby sweater, mittens, hat, scarf or slippers with supported soles would be the best and this yarn will sing.

About Shetland wool:
Working with Shetland wool has become one of my favorite fiber pastimes. A primitive breed hailing from the Shetland Isles in Great Britain, Shetlands are known for their dual coats, and soft, often coveted, almost downy (that's what I'd call it) undercoat. Working with a beautiful, clean shetland fleece is always such an honor.

I work with whole raw fleece, one fleece at a time. Sometimes I find them at my local fiber events or help out the grower with skirting or shearing in exchange. I process the fleece myself in small batches by soaking with mild soap until the water is clear. Often lanolin, the natural grease, remains in the wool, leaving a nice soft conditioned feeling on the hands. The fleece is then air dried either in the sun in warm weather or by the fire in cold weather. I look for the softest, most clean fleeces that I can find and always hand pick them myself. Something that is growing into quite the pilgrimage each year as close to shearing season as I can get. I mostly spin single ply, woolen with a loose twist in order to keep the character of the fleece alive, sometimes letting crimp escape my fingers before it gets twisted. I use a hand crank drum carder and spin all my yarns from batts. Then each skein is mordanted with safe and non toxic mordants. I use a variety of powdered extracts, local plants, mushroom, and lichens. When foraging, I harvest no more than 10% from any given spot and only once a year from that spot.

Additional policies

Please note; I use natural dyes which can create beautiful but subtle marbled patterns on fabric. Each piece is very unique and is a characteristic of the dye and not a flaw.

I pay very close attention to my dye process, however, with using natural dyes, it can be a normal for the color to rub off onto your knitting needles or your hands.

All the items you see here in my shop come from materials carefully curated, designed, created, photographed and shipped by me. I always use my own designs and never use others' patterns.

Please check out my website over at 44clovers.com where you will find plant dye classes I give here in Maine, and my blog were you can follow along to my plant dye tutorials, process, and other life adventures.

If you'd like to reserve an item, please convo me with the details. Once I reserve this item for you, I will send you convo and I ask you purchase said reserved item within 24 hrs of my reply convo. If not, I will need to re-list my item for regular sale. Having an item on reserve for more than 24 hours can result in loss of sales for myself.
