Item details

** This is for 50 naturally grown (on our property and from the surrounding area), hand picked and processed American Pokeberry (Phytolacca Americana) seeds.**

American Pokeberry is perennial plant in the pokeweed family (Phytolaccaceae)-- it grows up to 8 feet in height (2 meters), and is native to the eastern part of the United States. It’s also known as poke root, poke salad (or poke sallet), poke berry, poke, inkberry, pigeon berry and other names.

It has simple leaves, stems change from green to red/purplish, and a large white taproot (main source of toxicity). The flowers are green to white, followed by a deep purple, almost black berry which are a food source for songbirds as well as other birds and some small animals.

I have personally used pokeberries as an herbal natural dye for yarn and fabrics with a vinegar mordant, leading my white yarn to a nice natural beige color. Colors that result from the dye process result in a variety of colors dependent on process, mordant and time. Pokeberry ink is also made from the berries.

The seeds were fermented for 7 days. changing the water and taking off the floating parts on the top daily to ensure their viability (skin of berries and unviable seeds float off in this process, while good healthy seeds sink to the bottom). They were dried on parchment paper lined trays.

**Fermenting "wet seeds" can help improve their ability to sprout. Fermentation removes germination inhibiting substances from seed coats, makes them more permeable to water. This also helps reduce seed-borne diseases, sometimes leading to healthier seeds. The purposeful fermentation process of these seeds helps to mimic the natural process that occurs when ripe fruits are eaten by animals, or when the plant naturally drops the berries to the ground and they rot. By purposefully fermenting the seed we are helping to complete their natural ripening cycle.**
