I created The Jean Coat for my one-year old daughter for her first winter since starting to walk. Reminiscent of the wonderful wardrobe of Jean Shrimpton, this double-breasted coat has a reverse box pleat in the centre back, three-quarter length sleeves, an overlaid bodice and a 60’s-style bow at the back. How Mod!
Winter wool fabrics are my favourite for this pattern. Neutrals and plaids are great, but I prefer to pop with colour! Use a contrast for the box pleat if you want.
As an upcycling option, consider using old picnic blankets, or a large old coat... A voluminous 80’s coat would be a great find for this project! Reuse the buttons too!
For the front closure, there are endless opportunities to show your style. Buttons, decorative embroidery with hidden snaps, toggles and frog closures are all perfect. Symmetrical or not, have a play with this part of the garment.
Intermediate. A general understanding of garment construction helpful.
