This beginner level tutorial will guide you step-by-step through making a chainmail coaster backed with leather. The tutorial includes a template for cutting and punching the leather.

You do not need to be experienced in either chainmail or leather for this project. The tutorial assumes you are familiar with making the common European 4 in 1 chainmail pattern. If you are not familiar with European 4 in 1, there are various free tutorials online (I suggest this one:

Tools you'll need for this project are:
• (2) pairs chainmail pliers
• Leather shears or craft knife
• Poly cutting board or craft cutting mat (optional)
• 1/16” (1.5mm) leather punch or similar tool
• Leather needle (optional)

Materials you'll need for this project are:
• (279) 16SWG 1/4" ID rings
• Leather piece at least 4.5" square
• 48” waxed cotton cord (1mm)
• Elmer’s glue (optional)
