Item details

This listing is for the download of a PDF sewing pattern to make a girl's western show jacket in Girls Sizes 2-16 (see sizing chart above). It is NOT for a physical paper pattern. All views have princess seams and front zipper and can be made in a shorter version for riding classes or a longer version for halter and showmanship. VIEW A has a print body and sleeves, solid side panels, and a peaked collar. VIEW B has a face-framing standup collar with lapels. VIEW C has a collar with longer narrow peaks. Two “bonus collars” are included- a wingtip and a band style- which can be used with the VIEW A or C front.

The photos are of garments made by SuitAbility customers using a previous version of this pattern (see below) and are not for sale. Credits: Black jacket by Kay Wooley, red/black/gold jacket by Joyce Parr, and pink/brown by Kelly Thayer. All embellishments were added by the customers and are not included in the pattern.

The PDF file includes instructions illustrated with diagrams and the jacket pattern pieces. The sizes are nested. Please read the instructions first to see how to print out each view. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRINT OUT ALL PAGES IN THE PDF FILE. Download the file using Adobe Reader and print out the pages using 8 1/2" by 11" or A4 paper.

The jackets have about 3 1/2"- 3 3/4" of ease at the chest, which is considered to be fitted. See the chart above for finished garment measurements (in inches). It is VERY IMPORTANT to check jacket length, sleeve length, and back neck-to-waist lengths BEFORE cutting out. Also make sure that the sleeves are long enough for the arm position when showing. The back should fit smoothly and not pull across the shoulders. The shorter length jackets should end at the top of the hips so that the back hem doesn’t get pushed up by the saddle. The longer length jacket ends approximately at hip level.

The jackets can be made from many combinations of colors, prints, and fabrics, but we recommend using mediumweight woven or stable knit fabrics with 10-15% crosswise stretch (10” of fabric stretches to 11” to 11.5”). The degree of stretch in the fabric will affect the fit- the more stretch, the more relaxed the fit will be. Non-stretch fabrics used for the bodice and sleeves will give a snugger fit with less “give” when moving. The facings and hem can be interfaced with lightweight fusible knit interfacing such as SofKnit ™. Collars and the View B lapels need to be stable and crisp, so non-stretch fabrics with stiffer interfacing work best for those. If you would like to use stretch fabric for the collar, we recommend interfacing both layers. We specify fusible interfacing, but for some fabrics sew-in interfacing will work better. It’s always a good idea to do a test fuse first. Use a lighter weight one-way separating zipper. The zipper pull is visible, so choose the color of the zipper to be a design accent. If you can’t find the exact length in the color you want, buy a longer zipper and shorten it per the pattern instructions.

VIEW A- The bodice and sleeves can all be made using fabrics with 10-15% crosswise stretch. Or use a non-stretch fabric for the front, back, and sleeves and a stretch fabric for the side fronts and backs. Use a nonstretch fabric for the collar.

VIEW B- Use a 10-15% crosswise stretch for the jacket and a non-stretch fabric for the front facings (lapels) and collar.

VIEW C- Use a 10-15% crosswise stretch for the jacket and a non-stretch fabric for the collar.

Fabric yardage and zipper information is given above.

Also needed: Thread; double-sided sew-through basting tape; VIEW B: six inches of 3/4” wide hook-and-loop tape; WINGTIP COLLAR- 1 1/2" inches of 3/4” wide hook-and-loop tape. Approximate interfacing yardages- For front/back facings and hem: Sizes 2-6, 1 3/4 YDS or Sizes 8- 16, 2 1/2 YDS; For collar: 2/3 YD.

PLEASE NOTE: This PDF pattern is the same basic jacket as in the SuitAbility paper version Pattern 5630.
